Sri Lanka and Israel are stepping up collaboration in the gem and jewellery sector, marking a significant boost to bilateral trade. According to a report by the Sri Lanka Guardian, the two countries recently launched an international trade initiative organised by the Sri Lankan Embassy and Israel’s diamond-and-jewellery community.
The partnership seeks to tap into Sri Lanka’s established strengths in gem cutting and finishing—and combine them with Israel’s global diamond-trading network and technological edge. Sri Lankan exporters, designers and miners are being invited to collaborate with Israeli firms in joint ventures and strategic supply chains.
From the Sri Lankan side, industry authorities emphasise that the island already serves as a quality hub for coloured gemstones and diamond‐cutting, and see this partnership as an opportunity to diversify markets and add value. On Israel’s part, its diamond exchange and trade bodies are looking to broaden their sourcing, create new product lines and deepen linkages into Asia and beyond.
While exact investment figures and timelines have not been publicly detailed, the initiative is expected to lead to trade missions, exchange of design and manufacturing expertise, and enhanced access for Sri Lankan gems and jewellery into new export markets via Israeli channels.
Overall, the collaboration underscores both countries’ intent to strengthen their standing in the global gem and jewellery value chain: Sri Lanka by leveraging its heritage and craftsmanship, and Israel by expanding its trading reach and technology-enabled services.
