The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has acquired American Gemological Laboratories (AGL) as part of a strategic effort to expand its global presence in colored-gemstone certification. The acquisition brings together IGI’s international infrastructure, market reach, and operational scale with AGL’s deep scientific specialization in colored gemstones. IGI said the partnership will enhance certification services for the global colored-stone market while maintaining rigorous technical standards.
Describing the move as a major industry development, IGI Global CEO Tehmasp Printer said the collaboration aims to build a future-focused certification ecosystem that balances scale with scientific integrity, while improving trust, transparency, and consistency across markets.
AGL will continue to operate independently from its headquarters in New York. Chris Smith will remain president and chief gemologist, ensuring continuity in leadership and expertise. Both organizations will retain their existing technical standards and service levels, while jointly developing new tools, reporting formats, and provenance solutions for international clients.
IGI added that the acquisition further strengthens strategic ties between the United States, the world’s largest market for fine jewelry and colored gemstones, and India, a key global hub for gemstone manufacturing.
