Surat’s diamond industry has secured a significant milestone with the grant of a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for “Surat Cut Diamond,” reinforcing the city’s reputation as the world’s leading diamond processing hub.
The certification was awarded to the Surat Diamond Association (SDA) by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India during a ceremony in Ahmedabad. The application process, initiated approximately 18 months ago, involved extensive documentation of Surat’s five-decade legacy in diamond cutting and polishing.
The certificate was presented by Unnat Pandit, Comptroller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, and Sunil Shukla. SDA President Jagdish Khunt accepted the recognition on behalf of the industry.
Highlighting the significance, Khunt noted that the GI tag acknowledges the craftsmanship of lakhs of workers who have built Surat’s dominance over decades. With nearly 90% of the world’s diamonds processed in the city, the “Surat Cut” designation is expected to strengthen its positioning alongside global benchmarks such as Belgium’s cutting standards.
This development follows the earlier GI recognition of Surat Zari Craft and is poised to enhance branding, traceability, and international market credibility for Indian diamond manufacturers and exporters.
