Rio Tinto’s Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories has achieved a major milestone, producing 150 million carats of rough diamonds since beginning operations in 2003.
Known for its gem-quality white diamonds and a small share of yellow stones, Diavik is the first Canadian mine to surpass 150 million carats, exceeding its original production forecast of just over 100 million carats.
Matthew Breen, Chief Operating Officer, credited the achievement to the team’s commitment to safe, efficient operations under challenging conditions. He also thanked investors, community, business, and government partners for their support.
Comprising four pipes, the Diavik mine is set to end production in early 2026. Closure plans are already in place, focusing on safety, land restoration, biodiversity, and community development.
