In a significant development within the jewelry industry, the Seattle Chapter of the Women’s Jewelry Association (WJA) has collectively resigned, citing deep misalignment with the values and leadership direction of the national board.

The decision announced through an official statement, comes in response to controversial remarks made by WJA President-elect Gabrielle Grazi during an all-membership call on December 10, 2024. The remarks related to WJA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) initiatives raised serious concerns among the Seattle Chapter leadership, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and calls for accountability

Despite repeated efforts to engage with the national board and seek corrective measures, the Seattle Board stated they could not restore confidence in the organization’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and safe environment for women in the jewelry sector.

In their resignation letter, the Seattle Chapter Board members expressed disappointment and frustration, stating:

"We have worked tirelessly to find solutions and advocate for the values we believe in. However, after exhausting all avenues, we can no longer stand by an organization that does not align with our core principles."

Further intensifying the controversy, the board outlined five key requests in a letter dated January 17, 2025, to restore integrity within WJA. However, with none of these requests being met and Gabrielle Grazi remaining in her position despite widespread calls for her resignation, the chapter felt compelled to take a firm stand.

Additionally, the apology issued by the national leadership was deemed insufficient, as it placed the burden on members’ interpretation of Grazi’s remarks rather than acknowledging the fundamental issue at hand.

The resignation of the Seattle Chapter Board adds to the growing instability within WJA, as several chapters have already disbanded in response to the controversy. The move will significantly affect the association’s reputation and financial stability.

"We are saddened to step away from a community we have dedicated ourselves to, but standing up for what is right is more important," the statement concluded.

The resignation raises broader questions about leadership accountability, inclusivity, and the future direction of WJA, leaving industry professionals watching closely for the subsequent developments.
