Issue XXII 2014

Design is an intrinsic part of any jewellery collection and jewellery designers play a key role in giving life to a jewellery piece by expressing their talent on a precious metal or a gemstone. Every jewellery designer is unique as he / she has a mind that travels, that speaks a global language and that which understands the essence of nature and elements. It is this gifted creativity that is translated into a jewellery piece by a designer which in turn is applauded by not only the person wearing the particular piece, but also by the society as a whole. A design gives Life to a jewellery piece and communicates with people who appreciate the intricacies that has gone into it. A designer has to understand this aspect of connecting to the consumer, his idea or emotion that has gone behind designing a piece. Every designer works on a particular theme while designing jewellery. The designer can choose from a gamut of available options while starting work. The theme could be anything ranging from Nature, Elements such as Water, Fire, Earth, Universe or some designers choose to work on societal responsibilities such as "Save Trees", "Global Warming", "Save Water" etc. A theme helps the designers' effort to arrive at a logical conclusion while designing a piece and this logic helps her to achieve the important aspect of "connection" between him and the buyer.

Creativity is a plethora of stimulating idea's that a designer experiences and transforms them into workable concepts. There are a number of schools that teach the very essence of "creativity" and helps students understand or bring out this talent in the form of a jewellery piece. Leading teaching schools such as Gemological Institute of America [GIA], International Gemological Institute [IGI], HRD Antwerp are some of the many institutions that focus on designing courses for aspiring students. The said courses help the students to understand the importance of jewellery designing and the creative art that goes behind every jewellery piece. With experience and understanding the jewellery designer grows to transform the very thought process of every jewellery customer and helps him / her find a message in the jewellery collections that he buys or aspires to posses.

International award winner Nada G™ creates timeless fine jewelry pieces with an edge, that make up an impressive tailormade and high-end portfolio in 18k gold, adorned with precious and semiprecious stones. Each piece is intricately crafted with passion and equalled in doses of time, labour and beauty, all combined. Nada Ghazal, Designer, Founder and Managing Partner, refers to her collections and her work as nothing less than utter passion, and above all, true labour of love.

In 1994, and after gaining a degree in Advertising Design from the Lebanese American University, Nada travelled to Dubai, UAE to work for a multinational advertising agency. Working in advertising gave Nada a canvas to express her artistic talents, and a better understanding of creating and building brands. After working for 10 years in advertising and winning multiple regional and international advertising awards, Nada knew that it was time for her to create her own brand. Whatever that was to be, she knew for sure that it had to be personal, authentic that will transcribe her emotions into something that was fascinating, distinctive and timeless. It would have to awaken emotions in others, come from the heart and give her a sense of pleasure. At the age of 30, Nada started weaving her first jewelry pieces with 18k gold string and precious stones in her apartment in Gemmayzeh, Beirut- Lebanon.

A year later, in December 2003, she showcased her first collection with 25 hand-made pieces. Her collection consisted of rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches. Every piece was intricately created by weaving gold string; which was all too familiar for Nada. The pieces sold out in less than 3 days and there was great demand to create more. Within a year after her acclaimed success, Nada established the Nada G™ brand and opened her first boutique and workshop in October 2004. Since its launch, Nada G™ has witnessed a year-onyear increase in sales and profits, and to accommodate further demand Nada G™ opened its 2nd and flagship boutique in Beirut Souks, Beirut Central District, Lebanon in December 2010. Nada G™ continues to grow locally in Lebanon and is currently looking to branch globally as well as launch an e-boutique.

Nada G™ aspires to emotionally connect with women around the world through its fine jewelry collections. Nada G™ jewelry encapsulates the designer's world of experiences, showcasing intricate masterpieces that exhibit a sense of order and form, designed as timeless pieces made of 18k gold and precious stones. Going against established norms, the pieces exhibit fragility in their coarseness, docility in their textures, and vibrancy in their candid statements. Each piece of jewelry echoes a different sense of emotion, mirroring not only an adornment of the senses, but more so celebrating what they evoke to be a woman.

Nada G™ has two distinct lines: THE COLLECTIONS and THE EXCLUSIVES. 'THE COLLECTIONS' are a true reflection of the designer's emotional sense of her immediate surroundings and what invariably moves her, materialized with the glow of gold and the luring energy of a gem. 'THE EXCLUSIVES' are custom-made one-off pieces that are reminiscent of a woman's desire for personalized jewelry and articulate, determined, seamless individuality.

Born in 1963, Selim Mouzannar was brought up surrounded by gemstones and gold. His grandfather as well as his father were and are also jewelers. Selim's earliest memories come from his frequent visits to the then Gold Souk of Beirut downtown. His senses were sharpened by the various creations shining from the shops' displays and the voices of clients and shop owners' interactions. In this unique spot of jewelers, suppliers, by passers and customers' exchanges he learnt the basics of human interactions and the industry in which he thought he will later excel. The war had long started in Lebanon when in 1980, young Selim decided to broaden his experience by moving abroad. He left the family nest and his journey brought him first to Paris where he graduated rom the Institut National de Gemmologie. Visionary in his own way he also got a Management diploma; convinced that the combination of such skills with his artistic nature would facilitate his ability to fly on his own one day. After a brief internship in Belgium in the diamonds market he expanded his experiences working for a famous Middle Eastern jewelry maker in Saudi Arabia as Product Manager, Purchasing Manager in charge of gemstones assessments. He moved then to Thailand, as Far East Purchasing Manager for Mouawad for a few months and then left to work as a ruby searcher in the mine of Ba Borai at the Thai - Cambodian border; quite a unique experience for this young man who dares going into new ventures and whose curiosity always pushes him to understand all the various stages of the business.

In 1990 Selim finally left the Far East and stopped for a year in France; brief parenthesis to obtain an additional Gemology diploma from the University of Nantes. Strong with this international experience and his suitcase full of degrees and amazing life experiences he then went back to his roots. Back to a Beirut he never forgot and always loved; back to a country where he felt he can make a difference by 'Translating Violence into Beauty'. He finally opened his own workshop in 1993 and his own shop in 1999 in Ashrafieh. Selim Mouzannar's boutique is now an inescapable place where Beiruti women looking for fine and unique pieces come and mingle. His strength lies on his deep involvement in all stages of the creative and manufacturing process: he himself designs the majority of his creations; travels around to hand pick the best gems and stones from suppliers he has been working with for years; follows closely the production in his own workshop where more than 30 skilled craftsmen manufacture by hand his fine jewellery. All pieces are scrupulously inspected before being presented to clients and new models can be reviewed many times before meeting Selim's satisfaction. This explains why most of his creations are somehow unique pieces and have a very specific identity.

The sudden war in Lebanon in July-August 2006 and the consequent recession that followed push him to implement ahead of time what he was already planning: expand the brand and the collections abroad. Fiercely loyal to his team of expert artisans and unwilling to downsize every time his country was subject to political and economic turmoil, Selim Mouzannar officially launched in 2009 his international strategy. He participated in various exhibitions in France, the UAE and received positive feedbacks from both the media and his professional peers. Selim Mouzannar's collections are in Istanbul high End boutiques Midnight Express, Bloomingdale's and Harvey Nichols Dubai; Annoushka Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges in London, as well as the renowned Le Bon Marché in Paris.

Pioneer in rehabilitating the Falamenk Ottoman jewelry tradition, Selim takes his inspiration from elements in his life that are dear to him: To name a few, his city's old architecture (the 'Beirut' collection); relations that binds people together (the 'Link' Collection); preserving our patrimony and our environment (the 'Terra' collection); anchoring our present into our historical heritage (the 'Kastak' collection). Indeed for Selim, 'Translating Violence into Beauty' is not only a statement…It is a state of mind… It is a way of life!

Having studied architecture at University College London, and specializing in Islamic Art andArchitecture, Nadia Dajani shifted her design skills from the larger to the smaller scale, to make intricate and original pieces of jewellery with a distinctive style influenced by Arab culture and tradition. These pieces became statements as they represented traditional stories and heritage in a modern way, thereby establishing a contemporary Arabian style in jewellery.

Seeking to convey the values of peace and love through her art pieces, Nadia presents her 'Salam' collection to the world, from an area where political unrest and turmoil prevail. The words are intended to bring spiritual comfort to those who wear them, and act as a reminder of the basic values and principles that are important to all mankind. Nadia Dajani's Jewellery is currently showcased at the 'Nadia Dajani' flagship store, located at the Intercontinental Hotel Amman, Jordan, as well as the Louvre Museum Shop, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and Rivoli Arcade in the UAE as well as international exhibitions. We are currently designing a special line for the Aga Khan Museum, due to open in Toronto in 2014, working closely with their team to create a special collection inspired by artefacts in the museum.

Contemporary Arabian art jewellery designed by Nadia Dajani and lovingly hand crafted, incorporating the beautiful art of Arabic Calligraphy with words and phrases which, with their spiritual meanings, are a vehicle for spreading messages of peace and harmony to the world. Nadia's passion for jewellery making led her to design with silver and natural gemstones to create a distinctive style and unique pieces, many of which are influenced by Arab culture and tradition.

Working with different materials, following fashion trends yet retaining a strong link with cultural dimension in design, the collections are named authentically to reflect their inspiration. In order to explain the message further, a small text accompanies each item of jewellery, each piece of which reflects the richness of Arab culture and heritage.

The eponymous jewellery line from London-based designer Noor Fares is a complex mix of old-world tradition and modern fashion sensibility. Being aesthetically informed largely by her Lebanese heritage and worldly, creative childhood, Fares’ pieces are imbued with the assured eclecticism of a born artisan. Days spent rifling through her artist mother’s jewellery box, and playing in her designer aunt’s Paris atelier were to set in motion a love of beautiful objects that inform her work till today.

Following an Art History degree and a host of global adventures (picking up exotic trinkets along the way), Noor Fares put her love of fine art to work, beginning her design journey with talisman-like, hand-crafted treasures as one-off commissions for her growing bunch of admirers. Furthering her craft, Noor took a course, learning about the properties of the precious stones and fine metals she was so drawn to, as well as the ancient techniques of artisanal jewellery design, finally setting up her own line in 2009.

Exploring mythical themes and symbols, the pieces often feature an engraved eye, a way of offering the wearer protection, in keeping with the ancient Lebanese tradition; so too is the reference to traditional mosaic designs anchored in a sense of the sacred. But while these motifs are often grounded in the past, the fine finishing and sculptural, geometric quality lend the range a distinctly modern feel.

Using a diverse range of mixed media, including diamonds, sapphires, rhodium, white gold, ebony and mother of pearl, there is an unexpectedly discreet quality to the finishing, belying the obvious luxury of the materials. Currently finishing an MA at Central St Martins, Noor Fares has already firmly established a successful brand, stocking the world’s most selective stores, from Bergdorf Goodman to Dover Street Market and Net-A-Porter, with an equally illustrious celebrity following. Winning the favour of street style stars such as Miroslava Duma and Elena Perminova, plus celebrities such as Naomie Harris and Olga Kurylenko, the Noor Fares line continues to grow from strength to strength.
